【10th-Anniversary Music Date】Cécile McLorin Salvant at Blue Note Tokyo

Oh, how sweet, intimate, thrilling, soaring, and intricate the SOUND! It saved the wretches like us, who had completely forgotten our 10th wedding anniversary until 10:00 p.m. that day.
I love going on music dates. We take turns inviting each other to our favorite shows. My last bet was, um, let’s call it adventurous, but this evening I was sure we’d have a good time. And it was even better!
Yes — it was Ms. Cécile McLorin Salvant at Blue Note Tokyo. We giggled and murmured at every bit of magic she cast with her voice. And the piano! What Sullivan Fortner casually dropped throughout the performance was surreal: tranquil invention-and-sinfonia moments, an A Train passing by, a glimpse of Gershwin — he executed them so elegantly and in perfect harmony with the other musicians. You could hear a pin drop during his playing, because he captures everything on stage and melts it all into his music. I know I don’t quite make sense, but you could and you would.
So many things have happened over the past ten years. We’ve made decisions, argued here and there, and oh, right, I’ve got a little bag on my tummy now, but we’ve gotten through it all and still smile at each other at the end of the day. I think that’s a success. And we look really cool together.
